Can bioactive components of breast milk support the prevention of infectious diseases?
Together with Primogene GmbH, a Leipzig-based biotech company, the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI is investigating whether breast milk could be significant in the prevention of serious infections beyond infancy.

Breast milk has a variety of immunological functions that support the infant's immune system on several levels. As part of a joint research project, the Fraunhofer IZI and Primogene GmbH are investigating whether certain natural components of human breast milk are also effective beyond infancy. To this end, the bioactive components of breast milk are being reproduced by Primogene GmbH and their potential for disease prevention subsequently investigated at the Fraunhofer IZI in cell-based and preclinical studies.
The project is funded by the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Climate Protection (SWMA) with funds from state and European Union funds (European Regional Development Fund EFRE).
