Institute in numbers

At present, the Fraunhofer IZI has a staff of about 640 employees.

Included are mainly professionals working in the field of natural sciences, such as biologists, biochemists, physicists and biotechnologists, but also doctors of human and veterinary medicine and engineers. Furthermore, the Institute employs a number of technical assistants, like PTAs (pharmaceutical-technical assistant), MTAs (medical-technical assistant) or BTAs (biological-technical assistant). The scientific staff is supported by the administrative department and the executive departments.

In 2025, the Fraunhofer IZI generated revenues of 47,1 million Euros.

About 53 percent of the revenues were in industrial contracts. In the context of competitive grants from the EU, German federal and state governments, about 30 percent of the income was raised. About 14 percent were generated through internal programs of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and other institutions (such as foundations).
